Kanchanaburi (Days 21-22)
Arriving in Bangkok on May 26th at 7:30 am, gives us 2 full days before leaving back to Vancouver early in the morning on May 28th. Looking at what to do with the last 2 days of the trip, I found out about a place called Elephants World in Kanchanaburi, which is charming town North of Bangkok that supposed to be an amazing cultural experience for immersing ourselves in Thailands history.
Hotel: Elephants World
Transportation:
Going from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and then again to the location of Elephants World was going to be too time consuming and costly to book through a chartered bus company, so I instead looked into private transportation. Getting a car to take the 4 of us from the airport in Bangkok to Elephants World and back, would cost us $37.50 each. The car will pick up at night on May 27th and drive us back to the airport in Bangkok so we can check in for our flight at 1:00am on May 28th.
Cost:
The cost of this unique and amazing experience is 4500THB, which includes 2 days of spending time with the elephants, accommodation for the night, and our food. We are going to be saving 2 days worth of food we budgeted for while doing this unforgettable experience.
Elephants World
Elephants world is an amazing place which works as an elephant sanctuary for old, sick, disabled, abused and rescued elephants, who receive the rest and joy that they deserve. This organization lets them enjoy themselves in their own natural environments until they take their last breaths. When I visited the website they offer a 2 day-1 night package where you can stay over night on location, while spending the 2 days doing various things with the elephants.
Day 1-
The Website outlines the activities of the first day:
- Arrival at ElephantsWorld. Meet and feed the elephants.
- Observe the elephants bathing.
- Clean fruit/vegetables, prepare and cook sticky rice for our old elephants.
- Lunch.
- Gathering / planting food for the elephants. e.g banana trees / sugar cane / banana grass or prepare fruit baskets for the afternoon.
- Feed sticky rice balls to the old elephants.
- Take the elephants to the river for a bath / scrub them clean.
- Feed the elephants fruit and vegetables.
Day 2-
The second day is described as having multiple options that we can do at our leisure:
1. Walking the elephants to the forest
In wet season our elephants sleep and eat in the forest. Staying overnight will allow you to walk the elephants out into the forest at the end of the day with the mahouts and get up early the next day to bring them back in before the day’s activities begin. In dry season you can take a walk with the elephants to the forest in the morning.

2. Hiking to the top of a mountain
Follow one of the mahouts to the top of the mountain. Everybody can climb these mountains and enjoy the view and look to the other side. The price for this hike is 100 Baht per person and it is a tip for our mahouts.

3. Bird watchingIn the early morning you can see a lot of beautiful birds next to our river. We will explain you about the birds that you can see.
4. Exploring the beautiful surroundings of ElephantsWorldWe have 24 hectares at Elephantsworld to explore with a selection of activities!
I would definitely recommend looking at the photo and video gallery on the website, it looks like an amazing opportunity to help out the elephants while gaining a lot of cultural content at the same time. Doing something like this at the end of the trip will add a really rewarding value to the last 3 weeks and leave us with something unforgettable to think about on the plane ride home.
Phuket (Days 19-21)
Hotel: PT Hotel Patong
This hotel is not beachfront for once on our trip, giving us some time to do some city/town exploring. This hotel is located about 15 minutes away, (walking) from the main shopping district, but has good reviews about being clean and affordable. Looking to book it for May, the cost was 250 THB a night ($9CAD) which fits perfectly into our price range.
Activities:
Flying Hunuman
This looks like a really cool thing to do, since anything that gives me an adrenaline rush will leave me thinking about it for days! Flying Hunuman is a zip trek adventure that is 40 meters above a jungle and gives you a really unique angle to view the beautiful surrounding jungle!
Cooking Classes
Who wants to go away for 3 weeks, eat amazing food and then when they come home not know how to make it for themselves? Not me! Looking into cooking classes is a great thing to do since you get to both learn all the traditional tricks and secrets of the food, as well as eating it... In Phuket there are so many cooking schools that we could roam around in the town looking at different prices/dishes before settling on which to choose.
Off the Beaten Trail
Connecting with the locals and being able to explore with no plan is something we would love to do in Phuket. Having time to explore different aspects of the culture is something important to the 4 of us. This activity is having no activity!
Food:
Local street eats day by day, but one night we have to brush our hair and put on our clean(est) clothes and go for dinner at Baan Rim Pa. This restaurant is supposed to make your taste buds tingle with every good sensation there is. We can class it up sometimes! (I hope)
Nightlife in Phuket is supposed to be very different from the expectation of "us" in the west. Phuket is named the "Sin City" of the Thai Islands and it has some pretty good reasons why it got the name. Phuket's night life is located on Bangla Road and revolves all around "the girls."They are for rent, for hire, for the night, for a dance, and just for looking. There is apparently no hiding it and in Phuket they are very open about it. Cultural differences? Maybe but what is so different from this compared to Vegas? Food for thought.
Transportation:
When I looked into going from Phuket back to Bangkok, it seemed utterly impossible to do it by bus or by ferry boat, so that's when I looked into flying and found out that AirAsia offers some great deals. I got us flights out of Phuket on May 26th at 6:00am and arriving in Bangkok at 7:25am for 1290 THB ($50 CAD). That is outrageously cheap for a flight that in Canada would cost around $300 dollars.

Koh Phi Phi (Days 16-18)
Hotel: Phi Phi Andaman Legacy Resort
Even though this is a "Resort" finding it online for $39 a night with 2 queen beds is crazy! Staying here for 2 nights making it $19.50 CAD each in total for both nights, is something we can live with. The reviews online make is sound wonderful having the "staff" meet you at the dock and push your "luggage" (backpacks) up the trail to the hotel. Even though this is a little more posh then we would usually do on this trip, I think it will be well worth it!! As my grandma always said "sometimes you've got to treat yourself."
Activities:
Hike
There is a hike to Phi Phi Viewpoint that is supposed to require a little bit of cardio but the photos will thank you later. The hike is 20 minutes long, bringing you to a 600ft high viewpoint overlooking the island. From what I have heard/read it's best to do this at either sunset or sunrise to get the ultimate "wow factor." It has an entrance fee of 30TBH ($1CAD) but can you really put a price on a gorgeous sunset???

Monkey Beach
Monkey Beach is apparently the most beautiful beach in all of Thailand from what many of the travel bloggers that I follow have said. First off, it is a powdered white sand beach with clear waters...Who doesn't love a gorgeous beach?! Secondly, it is combined with its other attraction, the fact that monkeys will actually come down and interact with you. They are so used to tourists that they will jump on your shoulders and visit with you, but watch out for shiny valuable belongings or food... They have been known to be quite cheeky... This is cool and all but when I read about it I wonder if the route of their aggression towards humans and food/sugar is an aspect of seeing tourism at its worst?
![]() |
Who knew monkeys could swim? |
Feed the Sharks
When I read about this activity, my heart started beating way to fast. Feeding sharks?!?! It's way to scary but getting out of my comfort zone is what this whole trip is about... right? Its a 6 hour journey that leaves VERY early in the morning costing around 500TBH ($18 CAD) depending on what company you book with. I am going to need some major convincing before embarking on this adventure!! Eeeek!
Captain Bob's Sailing Booze Cruise
This is something that can bring all the good things about traveling together, good people, good music, good sights, the ocean, and alcohol. This sounds like a good time from many different reviews. Leaving Tonsai Bay at 1pm you get to go on an adventure visiting Maya Bay, Monkey Bay, Loh Samah, Wang Long Coe, and Pi-Leh Bay. Food is included in the price offering you Lunch, fruit, snack and unlimited beer for 2,500THB. You save money on food during a regular day, and gaining awesome memories while yet again, catching another unreal sunset from the boat.
Food:
Food is supposed to be the cheapest in Ton Sai Village which is full of "open-air local restaurants" located near the beach strip and is priced between 35-70 THB a dish. The restaurants located on the beach have higher prices and if you order western food you are going to be paying way more. No better way to embrace the local cuisine then the $ factor! Thai food is already one of my favourite cuisines here in Canada, and I cannot even imagine how much better it is going to be over there.
Transportation:
We will be leaving Koh Phi Phi on a ferry on May 24th at 9:00am and heading over to Phuket arriving at 11:00am (2 hours). This ride will be $13.63 CAD booked through Phuket Ferry.
Koh Phangan (Days 10-15)
I have planned it so we will be on Koh Phangan on May 21st, 2016 which is the date of the Full Moon!!!
After lots of research about hotels, I found out that if you arrive 4 days in advance of the Full Moon (May 21st, 2016) it will be really easily to find supper cheap hotels that are really good quality since everybody lowers their rates to have more guests stay at their hotel. BUT just incase, I have booked Sabaii Bay Resort which is supposed to be amazing to stay at during the Full Moon Party. It is $30.96 a night for a room that sleep 4 people, and since we are staying here for 5 nights it comes out to $38.70 each for the 5 days. Not too shabby!!
![]() |
I mean... This pool though!!!! |
Full Moon Party
Planning the destinations so we would be here for the Full Moon Party is definitely going to be worth it. The Full Moon party on Koh Phangan is supposed to be legendary according to everyone I've talked to and all the raving reviews I've read online. Our hotel is located on the same beach as the party, making it an awesome location for these 5 days. Looking at videos and photos of these parties on youtube and Facebook make me giddy inside. (Note to self: Pack lots of neon colours)
Wipeout
Besides partying our butts off, there is a Wipeout course on the Island that is supposed to be a days worth of fun and laughter. Its a water obstacle course that mimics the show "wipeout" and looks well worth that money. Its priced at 500 Baht/ person but your pass is valid for the entire day, so if we can wrangle up some other fellow travellers is looks like a hoot.
Bike Tour
You can take a bike tour around the island with a group of people and a guide, which is a great way of seeing the island and getting in (at least a little bit) of a cardio workout (Yikes) . The tour I found gives you all the equipment and gear, and has a tour guide named Yut who is supposed to be phenomenal guide, making the adventure fun while bringing you off the beaten trail for a nice change, to be able to see some of the local life. There are 3 different tour options which go ranked in order of difficulty and range from seeing a coconut plantation, rubber tree plantation, temples, view points, animal care centres, elephant care enters, going through the jungle and much much more. The tours range from 1150Baht- 1250 Baht.
Food:
Again, we are looking to be eating the local food and drinking lots of bottled water. I heard a little secret that a restaurant on Koh Phangan has the best banana pancakes in the world for 30THB ($1 CAD), but its a scavenger hunt of talking to locals to find out where it is... I'm ready for a good challenge!!
Transportation:
Going from Koh Phangan to Koh Phi Phi is not as simple as hoping on a ferry boat, but rather the only way I could see getting there affordably is through Lampryah . We are going to be leaving Koh Phangan on May 22nd at 7:15 am and preparing for a long journey to Koh Phi Phi getting in at 4:30 pm. This transportation is 1150 THB ($42.50 CAD).

Koh Tao (Days 4-9)
Hotel: Nomads Coral Grand
This location is BEAUTIFUL!! This hotel is located right on Sairee Beach and goes for $20 a night and has some great reviews on trip advisor. It offerers dormitory rooms with personal linens and towels, and gender separate bathroom. To me this sounds like a really upscale Hostel, and the photos do it justice! (Free wifi is always an extra plus!!)

Activities:
Since the hotel has 2 pools and is beach front, we will have time to relax and hang out by the pool and try and get some of that thai sun, along with watching some gorgeous sunsets!
Snorkeling is supposed to be great on the island of Koh Nang Yuan, which is a small island right off the coast of Koh Tao, but has an entrance fee of 100 Baht/ person. The main reason we would go to Koh Nang Yuan is for the viewpoint hike which is supposed to be breathtaking. This island is supposed to be VERY touristy and have extremely inflated prices so I doubt we'd stay long. Looks like we will be going for the hike, and packing some cheap snacks in our day packs!
Renting a quad bike and exploring the island is another activity we could do whilst here! Koh Tao means "Turtle Island" "as the mountains can mimic the shape of a turtles silhouette." This is supper cool since it means that when taking a quad out you would have a fun day of going up and down dirt roads, hopefully leading us to another gorgeous view point! Getting a map and setting out on the day is one of my favourite forms of exploring.
Scuba diving is another great option of something to do while we're here. Although this is a more expensive activity, going for around $300 CAD, it's said to be a fantastic place to be able to get certified.
Food:
Local cheap eats are a backpackers paradise!! This island is full of cheap delicious food, and from what I have read, the fresh seafood is supposed to be rave worthy. YUMMMM I'm hungry just thinking about it!
Transportation:
We will be leaving on May 17th at 2:00pm getting picked up by a water boat at Mae Head Pier to take us to our next destination of Koh Phangan, arriving in at 3:30pm. The cost of this is $13.24 CAD each! When researching how to go about getting between the Islands, someone on trip advisor recommended Phuket Ferry, which after looking into is an awesome means of transportation for hoping between the islands.

Bangkok (Days 1-3)
Hostel: Bed Station Hostel
This Hostel is easily accessible from the airport by use of public transportation (BTS) , and is great find for us to book. Having such amenities as free wifi, complimentary breakfast, and washing/drying machines is awesome since we have limited clothing options! Booking a 4 person room is perfect for us since there are 4 of us travelling together! Booking this hostel at a rate of 600 Baht a night works out to $22 CAD. Since we are given complimentary breakfast we are saving a little bit of money each day on food.
Activities:
Since being in capital of Thailand, making sure we check out some religious palaces and temples is a must, before hitting the Islands for some fun.
(Although most of these places are swarming with tourists, I think it is important to make sure to go see them and take in all the culture we can, but also visit some of the more hidden gems along the way.)
The Grand Palace
The Grand Palace is a must see from multiple peoples review of their trips to Bangkok, and is the Travellers' Choice 2015 Winner . To get to the palace you have to take a river boat to the Chang Pier before entering the great white gates. You have to dress moderately inside the palace which means no tank tops or anything below your knee, so I see us packing some maxi dresses and pashminas in our day bags to be able to throw on. The entrance fee to this attraction is 400 Baht ($14.85 CAD)
Wat Phra Kaew
While Visiting the Grand Palace, the renowned Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha is "regarded as the most important Buddhist temple in all of Thailand." Pictures of the temple show gorgeous architecture, stunning colours of gold, and the mosaics inside are seemingly supposed to be breathtaking.
Khao San Road
Food:
We are assuming that we are mostly going to be eating street food or cheap eats along the way for these 3 days, but one place we would really want to go and splurge on, would be heading over the Moon Bar for drinks and dinner one night. This bar is 61 floors up and looks over the crazy beautiful skyline of Bangkok at sunset.
Transportation:
We are going to be leaving Bangkok on May 11th at 9:00pm on an overnight bus to Koh Tao. This journey consists of both an overnight bus and an 1.5 hour high speed Catamaran ride, making the entire journey around 10 hours. Being able to use the overnight bus to get to our next destination means we do not have to book accommodation for that night, saving us money along the way! The cost of this transportation is 1,100 Baht each ( $41 CAD).

Khao San Road is said to be the "backpackers paradise" in Bangkok. This short street is supposed to be an amazing night market, full of street food, clothes, and nicknacks, as well as the location of where we are going to be catching our bus to Koh Tao from.
Being able to wander through street markets having a taste of the local atmosphere is what we are really after on this trip. Although we do want to have attractions and sites to see in mind, we are mostly going to wander around asking other backpackers where they loved, or talking to the locals about places that are off the beaten trail.

Flight Itinerary
We leave
Vancouver and have a connection in Shanghai before finishing the long Journey
to Bangkok. The total travel time on the way there is just over 19 hours, and 21 hours on the way home, which is long but in hind sight seems
pretty standard. When I was looking at flights, I was shocked to be able to
find such a good deal as paying just over a thousand dollars for the round trip.
Usually flights are upwards of two thousand dollars, but maybe since we are
booking it so far in advance, it helped us bring the costs down. Flying with 4 girls really makes us a target in
the airports but we’ve all travelled a lot before and will (hopefully) have our wits
about us. Since we have short enough connections in Shanghai both times, we can just stay in the airport and "veg" before boarding our upcoming flight. Thailand better get ready for us!!

Along with
our round trip flight from Vancouver to Bangkok and home, we have also booked a
flight from Phuket to Bangkok on AirAsia. AirAsia offers some great deals when
flying within Thailand from island to island or even within the mainlands to
other parts of the world. A flight from Phuket to Bangkok was $1,290.00 THB which works out to $50.00 CAD which is supper cheap compared to some Air Canada prices..
